Carcassonne is a walled city located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region of southern France.
It is located about 90 km east of Toulouse and about 160 km west of Montpellier.
The medieval town is situated on top of a hill, overlooking the Aude River.
The new town, where the train and bus stations are located, is located at the base of the hill. Carcassonne is easily accessible by train and bus from other nearby cities, as well as from Toulouse airport.
